The department is composed of 6 main units: patrol, K9, investigations, special units, communications, and records. The patrol unit is the largest of the department. The patrol unit is responsible for responding to calls for service, deterring crime, conducting preliminary investigations, making local arrests, and filing police reports. The K9 unit is responsible for locating and removing drugs from the streets of the city. The investigations unit investigates many types of crimes such as identity theft, fraud, burglary, robbery, sex crimes, child abuse, and other serious crimes. The special units is composed of the metro SWAT team and is part of the Summit County DUI task force. The communications unit is responsible for answering calls for service and dispatching the appropriate unit to the scene of the crime or traffic accident.
